At Christ Church each class has a big question that they focus on throughout the year. Our History and Geography topics are tailored for children to ask questions, to debate and to provide a different angle for their learning.
These questions are:
Nursery: Why is it good to be me?
Reception: How can I be a positive member of my class?
Year 1: Who am I, Who can I be and where do I belong?
Year 2: How do we change the world around us? How do we care for our world?
Year 3: How has the world around us shaped us as communities?
Year 4: Are we stronger if we are together?
Year 5: How can people come together to shape the world around them?
Year 6: How can individual people shape the world around them?
History at Christ Church
What do we want to achieve with our History curriculum?
At Christ Church Primary Academy, we believe that our carefully sequenced History curriculum provides our learners with every chance and opportunity to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
We inspire learners to become life-long historians who are curious about the world in which they live and are eager to know more about the past. We will support our children to build a love of history by building awareness of both their own heritage and that of the wider world.
At the end of their time at Christ Church our vision is to give children a clear understanding of the past, how this can shape them as people and to understand how they fit into their community and the wider world around them.
Subject discipline:
At Christ church we use the idea of metacognition and self-regulated learning to allow learners to:
- Develop a chronology to have an awareness of time and how historical periods fit into the overall historical narrative.
- To form their own opinions on the past by interpreting different sources.
- To discuss the reliability of sources and how useful they can be to build a picture of the past.
- To ask questions on change and continuity, cause and effect, similarity and difference and how these can impact us.
We believe that by learning from the past we can make informed decisions on our future. These decisions in turn will help us to become successful and informed members of society.
Geography at Christ Church
What do we want to achieve with our Geography curriculum?
At Christ Church Primary Academy, we believe that our carefully sequenced Geography curriculum provides our learners with every chance and opportunity to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of the world and how they fit into it.
We inspire learners to become life-long geographers who are curious about the world in which they live. We will support our children to build a love of geography by building awareness of their local area and that of the wider world.
At the end of their time at Christ Church our vision is to give children a sense of wonder of the world around them, by giving them a clear understanding of the world, how they fit into it and the desire to investigate a variety of both physical and human geographies through careful questioning and research.
Subject discipline:
At Christ church we use the idea of metacognition and self-regulated learning to allow learners to: :
- Develop their locational and place knowledge
- Undertake fieldwork to understand the local area and how it fits into the wider world
- To discuss changes that may affect the world around us.
- To ask questions on the wider world, how we fit into it and how we can become better global citizens
